Italic in Create PDF from Word

I have a client who uses a specialty font.  It is licensed (including in italic, bold, and bold italic) and in the directory.

Using Microsoft Word 2010 on Windows 7, the "Create PDF" function turns all instances of the italic of that font into oblique/slanted roman; bold and bold italic function as expected.  It seems to be unique to the Word function: I can open the files in OpenOffice, use its PDF maker, and the italic comes out (though other things about the file are problematic). The problem occurs with several settings of Create PDF, including Standard, Print, and Press.  Forcing embedding (or unembedding) of the font doesn't seem to work.  From suggestions elsewhere on the forum for similar problems, I've tried copying or linking the font files in Adobe's Common Files/Fonts folder; that didn't help, either.  I've reinstalled the font a couple of times, and the issue persists.

I don't really know what I'm doing and it's quite possible there's a very easy solution here; any help would be much appreciated!
